This nutritional scale is a very easy way to measure carbohydrates (for diabetics) and other nutrition information from a wide variety of foods. The scale "zeros" out a plate (or other food), then you weigh the food, enter a code associated with that food, select the nutritional information desired, and read off the results. The booklet is very sturdy and wipes clean. Foods are sorted alphabetically, which makes them very easy to find. The booklet includes 999 foods, including both individual ingredients (e.g., milk, raw apple, white bread) and prepared foods (e.g., blueberry muffins, french fries, pizza). This is very useful when eating at a restaurant, eating prepared foods with no nutritional lables, and when you're in a hurry. Most foods we wanted were either listed or a similar food was listed. I compared the scale's estimates with those from a booklet and package nutrition, and found these estimates quite accurate. The scale is very easy to carry with you in a bag: about 2" tall and 9" diameter.
We bought this scale about a year and three months ago. It worked very well for about a year. Then, the nutrition and weight readings started degrading. These values are now very inaccurate, to the point of being useless. Low bateries does the same thing, and is not obvious (i.e., the display does not indicate low batteries). Mind you, we used this scale every day, and took it with us to numerous locations, and probably dropped it; so our scale got heavy use for one year before breaking.
The competing digital nutrition scale I've examined list only raw ingredients for their 999 codes, which is only useful when cooking from scratch at home. While I wish my Escali scale lasted longer, I was satisfied enough with its performance to buy a replacement.
