I purchased this scale for use in the kitchen. After some cooking, here is what I've found:
Pro's:
Very compact (about the size of a small can of tomato paste) and comes with a holder
Runs on AAA, not the more expensive watch batteries
Accurate
Unique design
Con's:
Can only handle 3kg. That seems like a lot, but keep in mind how much your larger mixing bowls weigh
Will not begin to measure anything until the load is at least 5g over tare (meaning you can't measure minute quantities)
The legs "flop out" instead of locking out, it isn't as much of a sturdy base as a regular scale
Not really German-made. It's made in the PRC aka People's Republic of China
In all, it seems like a steep price for a scale with that many cons that's made in China. But if you like the design and want a scale that can fold up easily for storage, it's not a bad buy. I'd recommend it for everyday cooking, it does its job "well enough" and it's plenty accurate (and cool-looking) for standard use. The weight of 1 cup of flour, for instance, can vary by as much as 30% depending on different variables. Even if this scale were to have a weight variance of +/- 2%, it'll still crush your measuring cups in terms of accuracy. And I don't believe that it's that inaccurate.
But for the hard-core and those that are employing molecular gastronomy techniques, steer clear and opt for a more precise, higher quality option.
