For the money, this is a pretty good scale. On the good side the display is nicely backlit so it's clearly visible even when a large bowl is placed on top of the scale and casting a shadow. It easily zero's out so you can weigh as you go in recipes. It easily switches units from metric to English. It's fairly accurate for most uses.
The negative? Well there are a few. For one, the scale resolution isn't too precise. It only measures in 1 gram increments, so you can't weigh anything that weighs less than 1 gram, or where fractions of a gram are important. The scale might read 1 gram, but it could be anywhere between .5 and 1.4 grams. See what I mean? This makes small amounts of things like spices impossible to measure. If a recipe calls for .5 grams of saffron or yeast, you're screwed. There's also no feature for toggling between decimals and fractions. Example: you need 1 1/3 pounds of potatoes, but to measure that on this scale you have to know that is equal to 1.33 pounds. It's no huge deal for anyone even with a working knowledge of how to convert a fraction to a decimal, but it would be more convenient to not have an added layer of thought when making a recipe for the first time.
There is at least one better scale made by Salter, but it's more expensive. There are also good scales made by the company My Weigh. It's probably worth it if you only want to buy one scale and want a good one. But, for most people this scale will be fine for cooking purposes and weight management and other such tasks.

No need to search around for the right-size measuring cup with this electronic kitchen scale by Salter on duty. Use it to easily weigh food up to 11 pounds (5 kg) in 1-ounce increments (1 gram). Simply place the item on the scale's round 6-1/2-inch-wide hygienic glass platform, which resists stains and flavor transfer, and push a button to weigh. Food can be weighed directly on the platform or in a bowl (not included). Best of all, the scale's Add & Weigh function allows for weighing multiple ingredients in the same bowl--the scale quickly reverts to zero for each additional item, all of which means time-saving convenience and less dirty dishes to clean. Even more, the unit's user-friendly push-button control panel on its silver-tone base provides a large 4/5-inch bright blue backlit display, which also indicates the current indoor temperature and functions as a handy countdown timer with an alarm. To operate, the unit requires one 9v battery (not included). Slim enough to slip into a drawer, yet sleek enough to leave out on the counter for everyday use, the attractive kitchen scale measures approximately 9-1/2 by 7 by 2 inches and carries a 10-year limited warranty.
