(More customer reviews)The moment I opened this scale, I was glad that I didn't shell out the $450 for the name-brand industrial scale that I am so used to. Why? Because this is a way way better value.
Though I wanted an all metal body, and the plastic body on this one almost made me not buy it, the construction is fairly solid, and I think it will stand up well to the semi-commercial use it will see in my home kitchen.
Turning it on, it was immediately obvious that it was far more responsive than the Edlund that I'm used to. Though they share the same one gram/0.1 ounce accuracy, the Escali is faster to change, and hits the 5000 gram mark from my calibration weight almost before I put it down.
Then, I lifted the top off the scale. The whole top came off!! This is a MASSIVE improvement over other scales that I have used, since there is one less place that is un-cleanable. For comparison, my previously favored scale, an Edlund DS-10, requires a cleaning regimen that resembles attempting to floss with a damp towel. Damp mind you, because a drip of sanitizer inside, and your scale is out of commission for a day or so until it dries out. With the Escali, I can actually take the whole top off and run a cloth across. The same vulnerability to water inside is still there, but a truly water proof precision scale is an order of magnitude more expensive than even the Edlund.
There are a few drawbacks. First, the batteries--4 C cells; that's a lot of batteries. Second, and this is going to be pretty minor, the access to the (admittedly clever) AC adapter storage is really sticky. That's minor, though, because I'm not really gonna be going back and forth much, as this is going to be on AC power pretty much all the time.
Finally, there is size. It's big (it says so in the descriptions). This may be a drawback for some, but it's just going into a dedicated spot on my counter anyway, and I knew what I was getting.
All in all, I am very pleased with this purchase.*For those who are unsure, this review is of the M-series, specifically of the 136, which is a 13 lb or 6000g maximum with 1g/0.1 oz accuracy. I suspect that the other scales in the M-series are no different, other than the maximum weights and the accuracy; please make sure you are getting the one that best suits your needs.
**The other scale I referenced in this review is the Edlund DS-10. 10# Digital Portion Scale (14-0321) Category: Scales This is a fantastic scale, one that I still use every day.
***edit: Maybe I should go five stars. Not sure why I clicked 4. Can I get a 4.75?
