(More customer reviews)I selected the the "Joy iPod /iPhone Docking Station and Kitchen Scale" because I thought it would be a nice addition to my kitchen accessories. About a year ago, realizing that everyone enjoys spending time in the kitchen, I decided to focus my home improvement activities there. Since then I have installed a television, bookcases, a window seat, additional lighting, an overhead pot rack, and new cabinets. And we've bought a number of nice accessories.
My wife and I recently started a new diet with new recipies and portion control, so we need a good quality kitchen scale. And, as a person with more than 5,000 tracks on my I-pod, I enjoy having places to dock throughout the house. So I envisioned the "Joy Docking Station and Kitchen Scale" would be a nice addition to the kitchen.
After it arrived, I read the instructions. I learned that the scale runs off the battery (which is provided), and it can be easily adjusted to measure grams, kg, or lbs and ounces, or just ounces. When you first turn the unit on, you can change the unit of measure using the on/tare button within the first second or two, before it self-tares. The scale is as good as any basic kitchen scale, and has the required tare feature for sequential weighing, etc. Even if the ingredients in your sequential weigh aren't the same unit of measure, all you have to do is turn the unit off (leaving everything from the previous weigh on the scale), then turn it back on and change the unit of measure before it self tares. I haven't used it enough to know what clean-up will be like, but I don't envision any issues cleaning the glass plate or hard plastic. We'll see if I can keep the speaker clean.
The fidelity is on par with my other small iPod players, all lacking a strong, powerful bass. Yet personally, I don't want a large set of speakers in the kitchen. The volume control probably should have been moved around front, but this isn't a big deal.
The "Joy Docking Station/Kitchen Scale" absolutely charges my iPod. I'm not sure why other reviewers are having trouble with this. I'm looking at my iPod right now as it sits in the unit, with the "charging" image flashing on the screen. I'll update this review in a few weeks if I find that continued use, despite the appearance of the "charging" screen, seems to drain the battery. Sure, the unit needs to be plugged in, but this is to be expected. I hid a couple of horizontal outlets (with dark plates to match the color of the stone) in the bottom of my backsplash to accommodate all the plugs.
From my point of view, what I got is what I saw. I am very happy with the unit. Not as happy, perhaps as the two German women dancing in their kitchen (with their oven mitts) on the outside of the box, but I'm very pleased!
